Introduction

In cooperation with Misk Foundation, Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper is offering an intensive five-day training program beginning on September 10, 2018, at its headquarters in London. This program aims to strengthen the skills of young professionals interested in the field of journalism. The program is designed for people interested in writing and editing, as well as public relations and communication. The program will provide the trainees the opportunity to interact directly with the editors, journalists, and writers at Asharq Al-Awsat, and pick an area within journalism (e.g., investigative, reporting, photojournalism, etc.) to focus on for the duration of the program. As part of the program, the trainees will be assigned to work within a specific department, and learn about the different theoretical and practical forms of journalism, news verification, intellectual property rights, digital media, infographics, and more. They will get the chance to attend editorial meetings, and be part of the daily process at Asharq Al-Awsat. Trainees will also have a lunch with a different leader within Asharq Al-Awsat to have an in-depth conversation with them about their work for everyday of the program.

This program is aimed towards students and fresh graduates of journalism, media, and related fields. Those with an interest and basic knowledge in public information, public relations, marketing, radio, and digital media, should apply. Proficiency in written Arabic is required and English proficiency is preferable. As a prerequisite to the program, trainees will have to read Style Book – Asharq Al-Awsat.

Admission Requirements

  • Majors: 
    • Public Information, Public Relations, Marketing, Radio and Television, and Digital Media.
  • GPA: 75%
  • Arabic language level: Equivalent to 80% or higher in Arabic courses or examination.
  • Nationality: Saudi or born to a Saudi mother.

  • Interview Video (In up to 1 minute, please film a video telling us why you are interested in this program, what do you want to get out of it, and what do you know about Asharq Al-Awsat Newspaper).
  • Writing Sample/s in Arabic.
  • Not to be currently employed in the news industry.
  • Reading the style book of Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper.

Note:

  • Exceptions, especially in academic majors, will be made if the applicant proved demonstrating obvious talents that can be fostered and promoted.

Who will cover the program’s expenses?

Training program’s expenses, visas, travel and accommodation will need to be covered by the accepted trainees.

Are the video and writing samples mandatory?

Yes, all applications without a video and writing sample will be dismissed.

Which language should be used for the video and writing samples?

The preferred language for the video is Arabic, and the writing samples have to be in Arabic.

Will students be able to miss classes to attend this program?

No, students should only apply to the dates that correspond to their school holidays.

Will trainees receive a certificate for this program?

Upon successful completion, trainees will receive a certificate in the “Art of Journalism”.

Would applicants be able to change their preferred date for participation?

No, applicants will not be able to change their preferred date for participation.

If an applicant was not successful in an early round, should they reapply for the next round?

No, all eligible applicants not selected for a round will be considered for the next rounds.

What is the dress code?

The dress code is business casual.

Will trainees be able to extend their flights or stay in London?

Trainees can do so on their own expense.
